Chapter one
Nakfa, the town that never fell
In the rugged Sahel mountains of northern Eritrea sits Nakfa — a small town that, between 1977 and the late 1980s, became the stronghold of a liberation movement. Trenches were dug into its hills, a hospital and a school operated under bombardment, and a community held its ground for nearly a decade.
Around the world, 'Nakfa' became shorthand for stubborn hope. Deploy to the hardest place, hold it with dignity, and make something grow there anyway.
Chapter two
When a nation named its money after a mountain
When Eritrea formalized its independence in 1993 and issued its own currency in 1997, it chose the name Nakfa for its money — putting the memory of resilience into every wallet and every market transaction. The first note was one nakfa.
To us, 'one nakfa' is a unit of worth that can't be devalued: identity, memory, belonging. That's what we print.
Chapter three
